We Treat a Variety of Mental Health Conditions
Anxiety
Anxiety is something that most people have experienced at one point or another in their lives. It is an anticipation of a future event that at times can seem overwhelming. When anxiety moves from being “normal” occasional anxiety into a persistent issue that interferes with one’s daily existence, then it is time to evaluate. Many anxiety disorders develop in childhood and tend to persist if not treated.
Mood Disorders
Mood disorders are wide ranging in their symptoms, and include depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia, and others. What they have in common is a sad or empty mood, or irritable mood that brings changes that significantly affect one’s ability to function. In the case of bipolar disorder, there is also a manic component that varies greatly in presentation depending on the severity of the disease process (elevated mood vs staying awake for several nights without fatigue).
Autism
Autism spectrum disorder is literally a spectrum of symptoms. It presents differently from person to person but typically has deficits in social communication, and restricted interests or behaviors. Symptoms are present early on but can be masked later in life with learned strategies.
ADHD
Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder/attention deficit disorder is something that most everyone has heard of thanks to the attention it receives in social media and news outlets. The main feature is a persistent pattern of inattention and or hyperactivity or impulsivity that interferes with development. Inattention could present as having trouble with focus, losing interest in tasks, and being disorganized. Hyperactivity is excessive activity (running around when not appropriate in children vs fidgeting, tapping, or excessive talking in adults). It can also involve impulsive behaviors that reflect a desire for immediate gratification. It might show up as being intrusive socially, running into the street without looking, or making important decisions without thinking of the long term ramifications of them.
PTSD / Trauma / Stressor-Related Disorders
Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders occur after exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. It has a close relationship with anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders, as well as dissociative disorders. The distress following exposure to a stressful event is varied- and no two people react the same way! It is not uncommon for the client to have a combination of symptoms from anger and aggression to anhedonia and dissociation.
Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are deeply ingrained patterns of behavior that differ enough from social norms that it can be problematic for the client to recognize how to relate and act in certain situations or with other people. It can cause problems with work, school, relationships and social settings. There are three main groupings of disorders that are divided according to similar traits. Typically personality disorders emerge in the teen years, but can also appear into early adulthood. There is treatment for personality disorders, and without it there is a good chance that it causes increasing disruption in a client’s life.
